Background

Gemini is quite useful lately. The Google's AI is attached to my Google account, so I thought — Why not employ it? — And I did. Gemini is rather tremendous. Mostly.

Anyway, moving on.

The Utterance

I just found out the creators of Gemini pronounce it "JEM-IN-EYE". Indeed.

JEM-IN-EYE

You know, "bikini". If we followed that rule — the "eye" suffix — then it'd become "BIKIN-EYE". Possibly even —

BYE-KYEN-EYE

Or "zucchini". Never being said "ZOO-KEEN-EYE". — Pardon me, good sir. Could you add some more zoo-keen-eye into my pasta? That would be splendid. Thank you.

English dictionaries, all of them, put either —

/ˈdʒem.ɪ.naɪ/,
or /ˈdʒem.ə.naɪ/

— for Gemini pronunciation. Which I found utterly amusing. AMUSING. Hence, this post.

Well, all things considered, the "G" in Gemini — if we go back to Classical Latin root — is not pronounced "J" at all. Simply that hard "G". English got it from Ecclesiastical Latin. The Latin/Italian style, "G" to "J".

"Gemini" arrived into English already wearing its Italianate soft "G", rather than the original Classical hard one. So we have the softened "G" from Italian flair, and English sliding off into a diphthong with the "eye".

Bikini

Bikini. It's not Latin based. But it has -ini such as in Gem-ini.

French automobile engineer and clothing designer Louis Réard introduced a design called the "Bikini" in Paris in July 1946, naming it after Bikini Atoll in the Pacific. And that goes way back to "Pikinni".

But English honours the "ee" in bikini, just straight adoption. Because it arrived via Paris and Réard's own pronunciation, and nobody fancied telling the French how to say their own word. — Ah. Sounds grand. Understood. Mercy. Have mercy.

English never did —

Say, that sounds daft. I pronounce it bye-kyen-eye. Oooh, I'm wearing a bye-kyen-eye. Look at my builder's bum being exposed to the world!

The English Summary

Frankly "Gemini" being pronounced "eye" whilst "bikini" gets "ee" isn't a bug, it's just English being English. That's the whole operating system.

I pronounce it the way I like. Accept it. 👑
