Optical Illusion Using Dark and Light Color : Wired Logo

I noticed this on Wired Magazine's logo. Anyway I'm not a hardcore-loyal-reader, but I'm subscribed to their news and articles. Sometimes, they have pretty funny stories.

About the logo, I know that the letters are all aligned perfectly - horizontally and vertically, I've checked that. Man, that's a bit creepy, isn't it? Checking out logo. BUT, I noticed the dark colored letters with the light background (on their website) have the illusion of "not being aligned" with the other light colored letters - dark background. Or is it just my easily-distracted brain. Nevertheless, that is SO COOL. So, I made this doodle with CSS below.

You can change the letters' light/dark background color so you'll see the difference of having different light-dark background sequence or just one solid light/dark background.

I put the word "Weird", since even though it's simple, yet still mind boggling.

Now take a focused look for about 5 seconds, or 5 hours, up to you, before you change it.
